Kindred Brands Inc. is a US based startup that innovates customizable 3D jewelry printing technologies. They are the winners of the Boston Innovators Group startup competition. The company was established by a team of innovators who had previously led companies acquired by Brooktrout, Novell and Trip Advisor. With great vision and ambition in mind, Kindred Brands Inc. aims to break into the global jewelry market (which is currently $250 bn in size and still growing) with the Troupe project. It is an innovative 3D printable charm and pendant platform with a self-service design and a massive all virtual marketplace, which empowers consumers to design their own jewelry in minutes by using simple 3D design tools.
Today’s customers are looking for customized solutions more and more often. If you visited the Nike homepage, you would notice that they are not even asking you to shop any more, they are asking you to customize your shoes. Customizable fashion is exploding in the 2D world; you can get anything printed on all kinds of apparel or footwear, but, when moved to the 3D world, it becomes too complex for the consumer. Kindred Brands Inc. are now stepping in to change all that. Troupe targets to make 3D customization easy and provide a platform for jewelry designers and customers to create, buy and sell amazing jewelry.
Kindred Brands Inc. partnered with Indeform on the Troupe project to challenge Interactive 3D Web with real-time photorealism, data and rendering speed optimizations, geometry, vector math, GLSL, e-commerce integration, management and rendering of backend servers as all-in-one solution. One of the tasks was to design and create a super simple jewelry customization tool that worked like a LEGO. The idea was that to create jewelry, the user would have to snap 3D objects in photo-realistic real-time together from an extensive jewelry designers’ community library or convert any 2D image to 3D. Anyone should be able to take an image and turn it into brass, silver or gold jewelry. If customers wanted to make a pendant of their dog, they would have to upload a photo and they would be good to go. Once the customers’ design was complete, they should be able buy it or sell it on the Troupe marketplace. Another challenging task was to design and develop backend cloud management for printable 3D generation and rendering. We developed sophisticated tasks management and distribution methods for 3D printing-ready mesh generation and rendering.
Troupe brings custom jewelry to the masses by using self-service to remove today’s complexity and cost. They introduced the first custom online jewelry design software and marketplace for anyone to use. They made it possible for anyone to design their own jewelry, set up a store to sell online, and shop for other custom jewelry from designers all over the world. This is the first time in history that customers with no previous experience can produce their own beautiful keepsake in minutes, all in photo-realistic 3D. Some users will opt to make designs to sell on Troupe’s marketplace. As a purely virtual inventory platform, Troupe can realistically expect to become the largest topical jewelry store in the world, and we are very proud to have put all our expertise and efforts for this great ambition to become a reality.
