Interactive typewriter and an interactive radio receiver for Joniškis Museum of History and Culture

Interactive Joniškis Partisans exhibition

The Client

Founded in 1989, the Joniškis Museum of History and Culture is committed to preserving and highlighting the rich heritage of the region. The museum's exhibits cover a range of subjects, including history, ethnic culture, folk art, archaeology, and sacred art. Notably, the museum features an exposition dedicated to the history of the partisans in the Joniškis region, highlighting their valiant struggle against the soviet invaders. In 2022, Indeform Interactive collaborated with the Joniškis Museum of History and Culture to create an immersive, innovative exposition of the partisans.

The Problem

The partisan exhibition of the Joniškis Museum of History and Culture is a valuable cultural asset that enriches the historical and cultural heritage of the local community. To enhance the visitor experience, the museum aimed to modernize the partisan exposition with dynamic and interactive solutions. Additionally, to showcase historical photographs of the partisans in an accessible and engaging way for all visitors. To recreate the authentic atmosphere of the period, various interior visual details and equipment were used, such as a typewriter and a radio, which was one of the most important means of communication for partisans at the time.

The Solution

To shed light on the unique photographs of the partisans in the Joniškis region and the stories of the Soviet reoccupation period, Indeform Interactive has developed an interactive typewriter exhibition. The exhibition consists of an original resistance-period typewriter, an interactive touchscreen terminal, and a projection integrated with an audio system. By pressing the keys of a typewriter on the terminal, an interactive projection displays photographs of the partisans, while an animation and video montage convey authentic stories about the most prominent personalities and events of the partisan resistance of that period. The integration of advanced technology into the Partisans exhibition has helped to create an exceptional visitor experience. The combination of history and technology presented a special chance to actively participate in the narrative of the partisans in the Joniškis region. This allowed people to familiarize themselves with the living conditions and challenges of that time and to comprehend the importance of the events that took place.Radio communication and the sharing of information were vital aspects of the daily lives of the partisans. As a result, an old radio receiver became a significant symbol of partisan communication. The Indeform Interactive team created a second interactive exhibit to represent this crucial tool. To combine the expressions of the historical context with modern technology, Indeform Interactive's team of experts undertook the remodeling of an old radio receiver. The radio's operating mechanisms were refurbished and supplemented with innovative technological tools to recreate and bring back to life an old historical device. When the interactive radio receiver is turned on, a crackling noise is produced, and playing wistful songs of the partisans helps to better empathize with the events of that period. This part of the interactive exhibition became an effective tool for creating a positive experience for museum visitors, while the partisan songs played in the old radio receiver not only complemented the environment but also helped to create a unique atmosphere.

Value added

  • The interactive typewriter helped to create an environment of important historical events using modern, contemporary tools;
  • The interactive radio solution and playing wistful songs of the partisans added an authentic atmosphere to the partisan exhibition;
  • The link between interactive systems and historical events helped to create memorable, unique visitor experiences.

Final words

The partnership with the Joniškis Museum of History and Culture has allowed us to design contemporary tools to disseminate information and offer one-of-a-kind historical learning experiences. The Indeform Interactive team is pleased that the renewed exhibition has contributed to the cultural and historical value that every visitor to the Joniškis Museum of History and Culture could enjoy. We believe that interactive exhibitions help to adapt to the different needs of today’s visitors, simplify the learning process, and provide an opportunity to personally experience the historical and cultural significance of such an important period of resistance to Soviet oppression.
